Flying – one of the oldest desires of mankind. Follow this dream: Spot the first efforts to conquer the skies, to feel the wind and to become airborne. In the History Hangar you can dive into the aviation history and learn about the beginning of flying.

And ... Action! What do Hollywood and the Luftfahrtmuseum Wernigerode have in common? Steven Spielberg himself! For the Hollywood blockbuster „Bridge of Spies“, the museum team built a complete cockpit and also the owner of the museum, Clemens Aulich, stood at Spielberg’s side during the shooting in Berlin.

Royal flair and pure emotions: One of our helicopters is „royal”, because it was used for a royal family. With our digital guide you will find out more, also how the owner of the museum found the helicopter on a junk yard.

Hangar 4 - Jet Engines and Modern Day Aircrafts at Luftfahrtmuseum Wernigerode

H4: JET HANGAR

Simply thrill. Entering Hangar 4 you can smell the kerosene. Here you really feel the stress of the pilots. Speed is the main subject in this hangar: Because here you find the jets.

Barrier tape? That doesn’t exist here.

In the Wernigerode Aviation Museum, the whole family can come as close to the dream of flying as pilots do. Whether it’s the jet plane in which Prince Charles learned to fly in the Royal Air Force, the infamous Starfighter or the giant Antonov: 50 airplanes and helicopters with a stirring history are waiting to be discovered, explored, and admired from up close.

Take a look at the Westland Whirlwind helicopter that Princess Diana travelled in – collector and museum owner Clemens Aulich discovered it at a scrapyard. Did you know that the wings of the Bücker Bü 131 “Jungmann,” which made its maiden flight in 1934, were covered with linen? How does an ejector seat work? What special features does a space traveler’s suit need to have? You can learn all this and more at the Wernigerode Aviation Museum.
